Negative Expressions

(13) Negative Expressions: Emphatic and Unemphatic negations

Actividad 1. Lea/read these notes. Lea Libro U28: p. 265-6, 267-9.

To make a negative sentence, we usually use NO or a negative word in the sentence/statement. We have two different types of negation: one that gives emphasis to the NEGATIVE word first and then the action: Nunca me llamas (You NEVER call me). The negative word is placed before the verb. These are called EMPHATIC negations. The second gives emphasis to the action and so the negative word is placed after the verb. No is always used before the verb in this second type. These are called UNEMPHATIC negations.

Emphatic Negations Words/Expressions: ¡Nunca! Never! (or jamás –ever-); ¡Nada! Nothing!; ¡Nadie! Nobody!; ¡Tampoco! Neither!; Ni…ni… neither…nor when used emphatically PRECEDE the verb like No.

Emphatic Negation Sentences (Oraciones)  
¡Nunca escucha Lilian lo que digo! = Lilian never listens to what I say
¡Nada trajeron Miguel y Ana! = Miguel and Ana brought nothing
¡Nadie me llamó! = Nobody (no one) called me
Tampoco estuvo Pablo= Neither was Pablo

¡Ni Carlos ni Pancho fueron a la fiesta! = Neither Carlos nor Pancho went to the party!

Unemphatic Negations Words/Expressions: ¡Nada! Nothing!; ¡Nadie! Nobody!; ¡Tampoco! Neither!; Ni…ni… neither…nor: Place NO before the verb; place nunca, nada, nadie, tampoco, ni..ni AFTER the verb.

Unemphatic Negation Sentences
David no llamó nunca = David never called.

No vimos nada = We saw nothing
No asistió nadie = Nobody attended
Nosotras no las invitamos tampoco = We did not invite them either
Yo no hablé ni con Esperanza ni Enrique = I did not invite either Esperanza or Enrique

Actividad 2. Study these emphatic negation sentences and the way how the second sentence becomes an emphatic negation. Then translate the two sentences into English.
Modelo: Verónica no estudió. Tampoco yo estudié. = Veronica did not study→ Neither did I study.
1. Siempre veo televisión cuando estoy cansada. → Nunca veo televisión cuando estoy cansada.
2. Algo (Something) tienes. Algo eres. → Nada tienes. Nada eres.
3. Alguien (Someone) me quiere. Alguien me llama. → Nadie me quiere.  Nadie me llama.
4. Yo no estuve en la fiesta. → Tampoco estuvo Hugo.
5. Yo no hice la tarea. → Tampoco nosotros hicimos la tarea.
6. Ana no quiso bailar. Katrina no quiso bailar. → Ni Ana ni Katrina quisieron bailar.

Actividad 3. Write 4 EMPHATIC negation sentences in Spanish. Provide the English translations. Use previous sentences as examples.  

Actividad 4. Study these emphatic negation sentences and the way how the second sentence becomes an emphatic negation. Then translate the two sentences into English.
Modelo: Yo no hablé con Nora. → Yo no hablé con Gaby tampoco = I did not speak with Nora.→ I didn’t speak with Gaby either.

1. Ustedes hicieron algo. → Ustedes no hicieron nada.
2. David quiso a alguien. → David no quiso a nadie.
3. Nora y Aldo llamaron. → Nora y Aldo no llamaron nunca.   
4. Conocimos a alguien.→  No conocimos a nadie.
5. Tú no conversaste con Iván. → Tú no conversaste con Gustavo tampoco.
6. Yo no vi a Olga. Yo no vi a Isabel. → Yo no vi ni a Olga ni a Isabel.
