6. Reflexive verbs: Yo me levanto a las 6 de la mañana. ¿A qué hora se duerme Valentina?

Interacción: What do you do early in the morning? Read the interaction and (a) mention what time B got up in the morning. Translate the small interaction.

A: ¿Qué hace usted cuando se levanta cada mañana?
B: Me despierto como a las 5 de la mañana. Mi mamá se levanta a cocinar a las 4. Ella nos dice: “Levántense” como a las 5.15. Yo me levanto unos minutos después de escuchar su voz. Luego me lavo los dientes, y me baño.

• Reflexive Verbs: are those whose action affects the same person who is the subject, e.g. lavarse (to wash oneself): Yo lavo al perro (I wash the dog); and Yo me lavo mi cara (I wash my face myself): Yo me lavo, Tú te lavas, Usted se lava; Nosotros nos lavamos (We wash ourselves); Vosotros os laváis (You wash yourselves); Ellas se lavan (They wash themselves).
• Position of reflexive object pronous: me, te, se, nos, os, se
Directly before the conjugated verb: Los niños no se lavan sus caras: The children do wash their faces.
• Your choice: when we have two verbs: non-reflexive and reflexive verb, we either place the reflexive object pronoun can be used before the conjugated verb: Yo me quiero lavar la cara; or the reflexive object pronoun can be attached to the reflexive verb: Yo quiero lavarme la cara.
• Reciprocal uses of nos, os, se:
Nos llamamos todos los días (We call each other)
Os escribís siempre. (You always write to each other)
Ellos se llaman a veces. (They always call each other)
Ellos se aman (They love themselves)
Cuídese (You take care of yourself)

• Special reflexive verbs
abrigarse: to keep yourself warm bañarse: to bathe oneself) enfermarse: to get sick quitarse: to take off
acordarse (ue): to remember cuidarse: to take care of oneself enojarse: to get angry ponerse: to put on
acostarse (ue): to go to bed divertirse (ie): to have a good time irse (to go away) sentarse (ie): to sit down
afeitarse to shave oneself despertarse (ie): to wake up llamarse to call oneself sentirse bien/mal
to feel well/bad
apurarse to hurry up dormirse (ue): to fall sleep levantarse to get up vestirse to dress oneself
