SPN 202 Spring 2012 Actividades Semanales: Semana 2

1. The Subjunctive: Adverb and Adjective Clause (C13: p. 158).

ACTIVIDAD 1. Read the following grammar points. Make sentences of your own if possible.

Present Subjunctive Mood
Formation: Drop ‘o’ from the first person singular form of the present indicative (e.g. hablo becomes habl, como becomes com, vivo becomes viv ). Add the following endings (hablar): yo habl+e; tú habl+es; ústed/él/ella hable; nosotros habl+emos; vosotras habl+éis; ellos/ellas/ustedes habl+en; (comer, vivir): yo com+a; tú com+as; usted com+a; nosotros viv+amos; vosotros viv+áis; ustedes viv+an.

Imperfect Subjunctive Mood

Formation: Take the third person plural form of the preterite tense, drop the ‘ron’ ending and add: (hablar): yo habla+ra; tú habla+ras; usted habla+ra; nosotros hablá+ramos; vosotros habla+rais; ustedes habla+ran; (comer, vivir): yo comie+ra; tú comie+ras; usted comie+ra; nosotros vivié+ramos; vosotros vivie+rais; ellos vivie+ran.

Usage
1.After a verb that expresses a wish, desire, preference, suggestion or request: Yo quiero que tú estudies (I want you to study).
2. After a verb that expresses a doubt, fear, joy, hope, sorrow, or some other emotion: Quizás ella venga (Perhaps she will come).
3.After certain impersonal expressions that show necessity, doubt, regret, possibility: Es necesario que ustedes tengan más contacto con gente latina. (It’s necessary that you have more interaction with Latino people)
4.After some adverbial clauses or adjective clauses.

Sequence of tenses

The use of the subjunctive is required in two cases:
(a)If the main verb in the main clause is in the present, future, or present perfect indicative, or the imperative, then the present of present perfect subjunctive is used in the dependent clause: Queremos que ustedes asistan a este evento (We want you to attend this event). Comienza a poner todo en orden para que Nora pueda salir temprano.
(b)If the main verb in the main clause is in the imperfect indicative preterite, conditional, or pluperfect indicative, then the imperfect or pluperfect subjunctive is used in the dependent clause: Queríamos que ustedes asistieran al evento (We wanted you to attend the event). Comencé a poner todo en orden para que Nora pudiera salir temprano (I start to put everything in order so that Nora could leave early).

Adverb Clauses That Require the Subjunctive
A clause that modifies a verb the way an adverb does is called an adverb clause. Adverb clauses are introduced by conjunctions. The following conjunctions introduce adverb clauses in which the verb must be in the subjunctive: a condición de que (on the condition that), a fin de que (in order that, so that), a menos que (unless), antes (de) que (before), con tal (de) que (provided that), en caso de que (in case), para que (so that), and sin que (without).
Saldremos antes de que vuelvan (We will leave before they get back)
Salimos antes de que volvieran (We left before they got back)

Adverb Clauses with Indicative or Subjunctive

Certain conjunctions are followed by the indicative when the action of the dependent clause is considered a known fact: Vamos donde tú quieres (We’ll go where you want). They are followed by the subjunctive when the action of the dependent clause is considered uncertain: Vamos donde tú quieras (We’ll go wherever you want). These conjunctions include: aunque (although, even though), como (how), de manera que (so that), de modo que (so that), donde (where), mientras (while), and según (according to).

Adjective Clauses that Require the Subjunctive
We use the subjunctive in an adjective clause when the antecedent (the noun modified by an adjective clause) is not part of reality. Buscamos a una estudiante que hable japonés (We are looking for a student who speaks Japanese). But we can use with verbs such as buscar, necesitar, querer the indicative as the antecedent can be part of reality; Necesito encontrar al profesor que habla portugués.
