-ar verbs: amar, bailar, cantar, comprar, escuchar, esperar, estudiar, hablar, llegar, mirar, practicar, tomar, trabajar
-er verbs: aprender, beber, comer, cometer (un error): to make (a mistake), comprender, correr, creer, deber, leer, poseer, romper, temer, vender
-ir verbs: abrir, asistir, decidir, describir, discutir, escribir, existir, recibir, sufrir, unir, vivir
When to use the different endings for the present tense?
A. To indicate activities in the present tense with regular verbs.
Ejercicio 1. Translate into Spanish.
1. I understand. 2. He studies. 3. We love. 4. I drink. 5. I don’t understand. 6. She makes mistakes. 7. I don’t believe. 8. They read. 9. We live in the United States. 10. You (usted) write well.
Asking Questions
Asking simple questions: This question elicits a “yes” or “no” answer. In Spanish this generally involves placing the conjugated verb form in front of the subject. ¿Hablas (tú) español?, ¿Escribe (usted) poemas?
Ejercicio 2. Translate into Spanish.
1. Do you study a lot? 2. Does he work here? 3. Do you (usted) live here? 4. Do you (tú) understand? 5. Does she write?
Asking Complex Questions: They request more than a simple “yes” or “no”. The asker wants specific information.
Interrogative words: ¿Quién? ¿Quiénes? ¿Dónde? ¿Qué?¿Cuándo? ¿Cómo? ¿Por qué?
Ejercicio 3. Translate into Spanish.
1. Who understands? 2. Why do we work? 3. Where do you study? 4. How does she read so much (tanto)? What are writing?
Asking limiting questions: Use ¿Cuál/Cuáles? (Which? (sing/pl)), ¿Cuánto? (masc); ¿Cuánta? (fem) How much; ¿Cuántos? (masc); ¿Cuántas? (fem): How many. Ejemplo: ¿Cuánto pan come él? (How much bread does he eat?)
Ejercicio 4. Translate into Spanish.
1. Which (ones) need water? 2. Which one do you practice? 3. How much Spanish do we learn? 4. How much money do you pay? 5. How many people (personas) work here?
