IRREGULAR PAST/PRETERITE: CHART FOR CONJUGATIONS
To form the irregular past of these 15 verbs, use the STEM (which derives from the verb) and then the ending for the person. Study the stems and the endings below.

B. Irregular preterite stems require the following only one set of irregular conjugations.
1. ESTAR (to be): estuv: Preterite stem: Yo estuve allí (I was there); tú estuviste; él estuvo; nosotros estuvimos; vosotros estuvisteis, ellos estuvieron.
2. TENER (to have) tuv: Preterite stem: Yo tuve (I had); tú tuviste; ella tuvo; nosotras tuvimos; vosotras tuvisteis; ustedes tuvieron.
3. PODER (to be able) like poder: pud: Preterite stem: Yo pude (I was able); tú pudiste; usted pudo; nosotros pudimos; vosotros pudisteis, ustedes pudieron.
4. PONER (to put): pus: Preterite stem: Yo puse el libro sobre la mesa (I put the book on the table); tú pusiste, ella puso, nosotros pusimos, vosotros pusisteis, ellas pusieron.
5. SABER (to know): sup: Preterite stem: Yo supe (I knew-learned about that); tú supiste; ella supo; nosotras supimos; vosotros supisteis, ellos supieron.
6. ANDAR (to walk, to be around) like tener: anduv: Preterite stem: Yo anduve; tú anduviste; él anduvo; nosotros anduvimos; vosotros anduvisteis, ellos anduvieron.
7. HABER (to exist): hub: Preterite stem: hubo (existed, there were, there was)
8. HACER (to do, make): hic: Preterite stem: Yo hice eso (I did/made that); tú hiciste; él hizo; nosotros hicimos, vosotras hicisteis; ellos hicieron.
9. QUERER (to want, to love): quis: Preterite stem: Yo quise (I wanted); tú quisiste; él quiso, nosotras quisimos, vosotros quisisteis, ellos quisieron.
10. VENIR (to come): vin: Preterite stem: Yo vine a casa (I came home); tú viniste; usted vino; nosotros vinimos; vosotros vinisteis; ellas vinieron.

(12) The Imperfect Tense: trabajaba; comía, tenía…

Imperfect Tense: In contrast to the preterit tense that describes a past action already finished and completed in the past, the imperfect tense describes:
(a) an action or activity that was continous, repeated, customary, without a specific end or completion: e.g. Yo siempre vendía limones (I would always sell limes); Todos los días yo iba a la escuela (I would go to school everyday).
(b) a past condition, state of being, or description where no act took place, e.g. Yo quería ser empresario (I wanted to be a businessman); mi mamá era muy trabajadora (My mother was very hardworking).

Regular formation:

AR verbs: Remove –AR; Add: aba, abas, aba, ábamos, abais, aban.

-ER/IR verbs; Remove –ER/IR; Add: ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían.
