SPN 102 Weekly Actividades: Emphatic and Unemphatic negations

To make a negative sentence, we usually use NO or a negative word in the sentence/statement. We have two different types of negation: one that gives emphasis to the NEGATIVE word first and then the action: Nunca me llamas (You NEVER call me). The negative word is placed before the verb. These are called EMPHATIC negations. The second gives emphasis to the action and so the negative word is placed after the verb. No is always used before the verb in these second type. These are called UNEMPHATIC negations.

Emphatic Negations: ¡Nunca! Never! (or jamás –ever-); ¡Nada! Nothing!; ¡Nadie! Nobody!; ¡Tampoco! Neither!; Ni…ni… neither…nor when used emphatically PRECEDE the verb like No.

Oraciones = Sentences/statements
No tienen sus tareas = They don’t have their homework
¡Lilian nunca escucha lo que digo! = Lilian never listens to what I say
¡Miguel y Ana nada trajeron! = Miguel and Ana brought nothing
¡Nadie me llamó! = Nobody (no one) called me
¡Ni Carlos ni Pancho fueron a la fiesta! = Neither Carlos nor Pancho went to the party!
Tampoco estuvo Pablo= Neither was Pablo

Unemphatic Negations:¡Nada! Nothing!; ¡Nadie! Nobody!; ¡Tampoco! Neither!; Ni…ni… neither…nor: Place NO before the verb; place nunca, nada, nadie, tampoco, ni..ni AFTER the verb.

Oraciones = Sentences/statements
No vimos nada = We saw nothing
No hizo nada = You did anything
No asistió nadie = Nobody attended
No invitamos a nadie = We invited no one
No las invitamos tampoco = We did not invite them either
No invité ni a Esperanza ni a Enrique = I did not invite either Esperanza or Enrique

Actividad 1. Make these positive/negative statements into EMPHATIC negations with new subjects when indicated. Vea Modelo. Use these negative words: Nunca Never (or jamás –ever-); Nada Nothing; ¡Nadie Nobody; Tampoco Neither; Ni…ni… neither…nor.
Modelo: Verónica no estudió. →Yo TAMPOCO estudié.
