SPN SPN 202: Primavera 2012 Notes Adverbios 02 Abril 2012

SPN 202: Notas semanales: Adverbios
02 de Abril, 2012

A. Formation of adverbs: Most Spanish adverbs are formed by adding the suffix –mente to the feminine form of the adjective. -Mente corresponds to the English adverbial suffix –ly.
Histórico-históricamente (historically); intense-intensa-intensamente.
Adjectives that don’t have a distinctive feminine form add –mente to the masculine/feminine singular. Fácil-facilmente; inteligente-inteligente-triste-tristemente.
Several adverbs either have irregular forms or are identical to the corresponding adjectives. Bueno (good) → bien (well); malo (bad) → mal (badly); mejor (better) → mejor (better)
Many adverbs of quantity have no suffix but are identical to the masculine singular form of the adjective: mucho-poco-demasiado-tanto-más-menos
Adverbs referring to loudness and softness have no ending but are identical to the masculine singular of the adjective: hablar alto/bajo-hablar fuerte
Some adverbs have alternate forms that are the same as the masculine singular form of the adjective: El tren corre rápidamente/rápido.
Masculine singular adjectives that function as adverbs are more commonly used in Spanish America than in Spain.
Tú hablas muy claro. Ella dibuja muy bonito. ¡Qué lindo trabajan ellos! (How nicely they work!)
Solamente (only) has the alternate form sólo (also written solo with this meaning)
Sólo a ti te lo digo (I am telling only you)

3. Mi hermana se quejó. ¿Estaba tranquila? →

B. Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner (adverbs that tell how something is done) come right after the verbs they modify. Hice bien el trabajo. Hablamos pausadamente.
Adverbs cannot come between an auxiliary verb and the main verb, as they often do in English. El paciente está mejorando rápidamente. (The patient is rapidly improving).
Direct objects, including negative and indefinite words such as algo, nada, nadie, and neuter demostratives, often come between the verb and adverb. Leímos el cuento atentantemente. (We read the story attentively). No dijo nada directamente (He didn’t say anything directly). Dijo eso torpemente (She said that awkwardly).
When two or more adverbs ending in –mente modify the same verb, the suffix –mente is dropped from all but the last adverb.
El profesor nos habló alegre y francamente. The professor spoke to us cheerfully and honestamente.

Adverbs ending in –mente can be replaced by con+ corresponding noun.
Alegremente → con alegría; Claramente → con claridad; inteligentemente → con inteligencia
Adverbs as intensifiers
Intensifiers, or adverbs that modify adjectives and other adverbs, such as completamente, muy, tan, etc. precede the adjective or adverb they modify.
Completamente inútil (completely useless), elegantemente vestido (elegantly dressed); muy bonito (very pretty); muy rápidamente (very quickly)
In colloquial speech, super and medio are used as adverbs that modify adjectives.
Es un proyecto súper interesante. (It’s a really interesting project). Es una persona media cínica (She is a cynical person).
