(9) Present Tense of IRREGULAR verbs: GRUPO 1: Verbs with irregular YO  forms. 

Actividad 1. Lea (Read) Book section: (U8: p. 90-92). Then read notes below.

Irregular verbs in the present tense have one or more forms that differ from the patterns learned from conjugating regular –ar, -er, and –ir verbs. The following verbs have the irregular Yo conjugations in the present tense: A list of these verbs include: dar, decir, hacer, oír, poner, salir; traer, traducir, venir, ver; saber, conocer.

Verbs that are irregular in Yo PERSON →:
1.DAR (to give): YO DOY (das, da, damos, dais, dan)
2.DECIR (to tell): YO DIGO, TÚ DICES, ELLA DICE, decimos, decís
3.HACER (to make, do): YO HAGO (haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen);
4.OIR (to hear): YO OIGO, TÚ OYES, ÉL OYE, oímos, oís, ELLOS OYEN
5. PONER (to put, to place): YO PONGO (pones, pone, ponemos, ponéis, ponen

(10) Prepositions: A-DE

Actividad 1. Read Book uses “A”, “DE” (U9: p. 96; U10: p. 104) and then notes below.

1. “A” indicates direction toward or to.
Voy al cine una vez al mes.
(I go to the movies once a month)
¿Viaja a El Salvador, Dr. Moreno?
(Are you going to El Salvador, Dr. Moreno)
Nosotros caminamos a la iglesia.
(We are going to walk to church)
Él da cinco dólares a mi hermana. (He gives five dollars to my sister)

2. Personal “A”
When a human being or person is the direct object of the verb, the direct object/person must be preceded by the word “A”. This “A”, which is not strictly a preposition, is known as the personal “A”, or “A” personal.

Yo veo a Sandra.
(Yo veo a Sandra) Yo veo a la gata. (I see the cat)
Tú ves al doctor. (You see the doctor) Tú ves el carro del doctor. (You see the doctor’s car)

The following verbs take “A” personal: amar, describir, hablar, escuchar, esperar, preguntar, besar, cantar, ver.

Preposition “DE”

1. “DE” indicates the place from: origin, the topic of or about.
¿De dónde son ustedes? Origin: from Where are you (pl) from?
Somos de San Martín. Origin: from We are from San Martín.
¿De qué hablan ellos? Topic: of, about. What are they talking about?
Hablamos de la clase. Topic: of, about. They are speaking of/about the class.

2. DE + EL= DEL (from the; of the; about the). DE+ LA, DE+ LOS, DE+ LAS
Ellos son del sur.
They are from the south.
Hablo de la película. I am speaking about the movie.

3. DE indicates the owner (possessor) of Spanish just as ‘S indicates the owner in English.
Es de Natalia. No es de Rubí. It’s Natalia’s. It is not Rubi’s.
Es de los estudiantes.
It’s the students’.

4. DE indicates ownership word order
The “possession” –the object owned- stands before DE and the owner, unlike English.
La oficina del profesor Salazar. Professor Salazar’s office.
Los libros de las chicas.
The girls’ books.
¿De quién es la tarea? Whose is the homework?

Conjugations of ESTAR in the present tense: Yo estoy, Tú estás, Usted está; Nosotros/as estamos, Vosotros/as estáis, Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes están.

Uses of ESTAR:
1. Location or spatial relationships: El banco está al frente del parque (The bak is in front of the university). La oficina está en el segundo piso (La oficina is on the second floor).

Regular  formal “Usted, Ustedes, Nosotros” commands

Regular commands are orders directed to the person(s) who are supposed to carry them out: Usted/Ustedes, Nosotros.
They are formed by dropping the ‘o’ from the first person singular of present tense of the verb. Add ‘e, en, emos’ to ‘ar’ verbs. Add ‘a, an, amos’ to ‘er, ir’ verbs. The use of ‘Usted, Ustedes, Nosotros’ is optional. Place Negative commands: No in front of the command.
Ejemplos:
(tomar) Yo tomo agua (I drink water) → ¡Tome agua (Usted)! (Drink water); ¡Tomen agua (Ustedes)!; ¡Tomemos agua (Nosotros)! ¡No tome cervezas! (Don’t drink beers”)
(comer) Yo como pollo.

Actividad 2.
Read these grammar notes and make your own notes (e.g. highlight notes, make flashcards).
Direct Object Pronouns (DOP) stand for the nouns or persons that are the direct recipients of the verbs. For example in the sentence: “Yo quiero a mi mamá”, MI MAMÁ is the direct object of the verb. When I want to talk again about “mi mamá” in my sentences, I replace this direct object with “LA”. So I can say. Yo LA llamo todos los dias (I call her everyday). Direct Object Pronouns are for THINGS and PERSONS.

Direct Object Pronouns for Things: lo (it masc), la (it fem), los (them masc), las (them fem).
1. El baloncesto es mi pasatiempo favorito. Lo practico todos los fines semana.
2. ¿Ves a la gata? No, no la veo.
3. También me gusta levantar pesas. Las levanto en las mañanas.

Nora quiere comer frutas. Las quiere comer todos los días.
Nora quiere comer frutas. Quiere comerlas todos los días.

INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS: me, te, le; nos, os, les
Indirect Object Pronouns stand for the nouns to whom, and for whom, the action of the verb is intended. For example in the sentence: “Yo escribo cartas a mi sobrino”, mi sobrino (my nephew) is the indirect object noun of the verb “escribo”. When I want to talk again about “mi sobrino” in my sentences, I replace this indirect object with “le”, which is the indirect object pronun. So I can say. Yo le escribo cartas todos los meses (I write letters to him every month). Look at this table.

(7.1) GUSTAR-ENCANTAR-DOLER

Actividad 1. Read these grammar notes and make your own notes (e.g. highlight notes, make flashcards).
GUSTAR means to be pleasing. ENCANTAR (to be very pleasing), and DOLER (o-ue verb) (to hurt) are verbs that use INDIRECT OBJECT pronouns (me, te, le; nos, os, les) when they are used to state what is pleasing to you or someone else, what is very pleasing to you or someone else, or what hurts you or someone. In English GUSTAR conveys the meaning of the English verb TO LIKE. Gustar/Encantar/Doler agree in number with its direct object noun (the following noun or noun phrase after the conjugated form of gustar).
Formation:
(A mí) me gusta el chocolate (I like chocolate; To me chocolate is pleasing)
(A ti) te gustan los chocolates (You like chocolates; To you chocolates are pleasing)
(A usted/A él/A ella) le gusta tomar té (You (formal) like (He/She likes) drinking tea; To you, him, her drinking tea is pleasing.
(A nosotros) nos gustan las naranjas (We like oranges; To us oranges are pleasing).
(A vosotras) os gusta el pollo frito (You -plural, Spain- like fried chicken; To you fried chicken is pleasing)
(A ustedes, ellos, ellas) les gustan comer carne asada (They/You like eating roast beef; To you, them eating roast beef is pleasing).
DOLER (o-ue verb present): Me duele/Te duele/Le duele/Nos duele/Os duele/Les duele
Ejemplos: Me duele el corazón (My heart hurts; is hurting); Nos duelen las piernas (Our legs hurt; are hurting); ¿Os duele la cabeza?
(Does your head hurt?; is your head hurting); A José le duele el estómago (Juan’s stomach hurts him; is hurting him)

Vocabulario: El cuerpo humano (The Human Body): el ojo/los ojos (eye).
La cabeza (head). El estómago (stomach). El pie/los pies (foot). La pierna/Las piernas (leg). La mano/Las manos (hand). El pecho (chest). La espalda (back). La cara (face). La boca (mouth). Los labios (lips). La oreja derecha (right ear). La oreja izquierda (left ear). Las orejas (ears). El brazo (arm). Los brazos. La rodilla (knee). El hombro (shoulder). El corazón (heart).

Rules:
1. The subject of GUSTAR/ENCANTAR/DOLER is the thing/action or person that is pleased, that is liked, that is liked a lot, or that hurts.
Me gustan los chocolates (chocolates, plural noun)/A mi papá le encanta bailar (dancing, singular noun). Nos duelen las piernas (legs, plural noun).
2. The indirect object pronouns (me, te, le, nos, os, les) always stand before these verbs. Les gusta el helado de fresa . Nos gusta el softbol. Te gusta bailar.
3. A (mí, ti, usted, él, ella, nosotros, vosotros, ustedes, ellos, X person) can be placed anywhere in the sentence to make clear who likes the thing/action: A Nora le gusta cocinar. Les gusta escuchar música romántica a mis padres.
4. Questions:
Yes/No Questions: ¿Te gustan los chocolates?
(Are chocolates pleasing to you?); ¿Le encantan las flores a su mamá? (Are flowers very pleasing to your mother); ¿Le duele la cabeza a usted? (Do your heads hurt you -plural-?) asks for YES/NO answers. You can answer with sí o no in front of the indirect object pronoun: No, no me gustan los chocolates; Sí, a mi mamá le encantan las flores; No, no mes duele la cabeza.

Interrogative Questions: You can ask any question starting with an interrogative word like Qué. Ejemplo: ¿Qué deporte/comida/pasatiempo te/le gusta (a usted, a Nora, a Iván)? asks for what sport/food/pastimes you (informal/formal), or someone else likes in singular. Note the use of the te/le in the question. ¿Qué deporte/comida/pasatiempo os/les gusta (a vosotros, ustedes, ellos, ellas)? asks for what sport/food/pastimes you (plural Spain, you plural, they (masc, fem). Note the use of the os/les in the question. You can ask someone what is hurting him/her using: ¿Qué te/le duele (a usted, a Nora, a Iván)? You can ask some people what is hurting them using: ¿Qué os/les duele (a vosotros, ustedes, ellos, ellas)? asks for what hurts you (plural Spain, you plural, they (masc, fem).
