Spanish Language Grammar: Verb Tenses
Present Tense (Indicative Mood)
Indicative Mood: Expresses facts, and actual situations: Ejemplo: Trabajo en Walmart.
The present tense is used to report what is happening and what is true now. This tense can be point specific or cover vast amounts of time.
Some Basic Terminology for Verbs
Infinitive: The verb is its pure form. In Spanish, all infinitives end in either –ar, -er, or –ir: hablar, comer, vivir.
Conjugation: Changing the verb from its infinitive form (where there is no action) so that it agrees with a subject (actor) and thus has a referent in reality.

Con sus clásicos lentes, los brazos cruzados y el saco gris desabrochado como el último botón de la camisa celeste que en algún momento del día debe haber llevado una corbata, demuestra que Bill Gates no busca ningún tipo de formalidad. Tampoco la necesita.
Aunque mantiene bien guardadas sus acciones de Microsoft, hace tiempo que dejó la empresa y el negocio de las computadoras. Y en un rubro completamente diferente, entra en el mundo del cine, financiando el documental “Waiting for Superman” sobre una detallada revisión de la educación pública, buscando nuevos cambios... para bien.
¿Cómo es que de pronto muestra tanto interés en el cine y la educación, más allá de la tecnología que lo hizo tan famoso?
La economía global requiere gente mejor educada y en ese escenario, todos los países tienen un gran desafío. Los trabajos que existen lo demandan. Y Estados Unidos se encuentra al frente, porque cada vez hay menos puestos de trabajo disponibles para quienes abandonan los estudios. Sería ideal si le mostráramos al mundo que una economía rica también puede lograr que niños con padres de menos ingresos pueden seguir un buen camino.
¿Desde su experiencia conoce algún país en particular que supera al resto en el sistema de la educación?
Finlandia tiene buenas prácticas. Algunas escuelas de Asia, también. Pero en general no puedo decirte que alguien llega a la perfección en el ámbito de la educación. Y Estados Unidos, ahora mismo, va en camino hacia el último lugar entre los 30 países más ricos. Estamos en el puesto 25, mientras que hace 20 años atrás figurábamos por encima de todos los promedios. Es decir que hemos empeorado porque no nos hemos preocupado en tener mejores expectativas del sistema. Tampoco hay un país en especial para imitar. Necesitamos tomar buenas ideas de otros, pero también enfrentamos desafíos muy particulares.
¿Los avances de la tecnología también empeoran o ayudan a mejorar la educación global?
La tecnología seguro que ayuda, pero sería muy fácil esperar demasiado en ese sentido, como si una mágica tecnología pudiera resolver el problema. Por ejemplo, siempre hemos tenido muchísimos libros de texto. Y si los jóvenes son motivados y saben por qué aprenden, realmente van a querer aprender. Internet ayuda a los estudiantes motivados. Es una herramienta que permite que otros maestros vean lo que hacen otros buenos maestros. Ahí hay una buena promesa. Una tercera parte de los fondos de nuestra fundación, alrededor de 700 millones de dólares anuales se invierten en la tecnología dedicada a la educación.
¿La crisis económica complica la situación para implementar nuevos cambios?
Seguro. Si la situación económica es mala, la tendencia es pensar en términos inmediatos. Y mejorar la educación es fundamental para la economía, para crear oportunidades equitativas, pero ciertos temas llevan mucho tiempo. Si se precisan dos, tres o cuatro años para encontrar un mejor camino, los estudiantes que lo experimenten podrán conseguir mejores trabajos. Y si hacemos cuentas tomaría por lo menos una década, antes de ver un beneficio sustancial con las reformas que se hagan ahora. Y por eso es tan fácil dejar de invertir así.
¿El sistema actual de educación afecta en alguna medida a Microsoft?
Ciertamente se puede ver que tanto en la ciencia como la ingeniería, comparando con el resto del mundo, los que estudian en Estados Unidos son un porcentaje reducido. Y en una compañía como Microsoft resulta mucho más difícil encontrar esa gente en Estados Unidos.
Y muchos de los que están, incluso inmigraron de otros países. Si te fijas en el departamento científico de informática, en las mejores escuelas, la mayoría no nació en Estados Unidos. En la Universidad de Berkeley, el 70% viene de otro país. Y eso te dice mucho sobre el sistema de educación, porque si analizamos lo más básico de aquéllos que terminan la escuela secundaria completa, tienen exactamente el mismo fenómeno.
¿Quiere decir que la gran mayoría de los nuevos ingenieros y científicos que trabajan para Estados Unidos nacieron en otros países?
Claro. Hay muchas compañías nuevas en Asia que están creando esos puestos de trabajo, innovando. Y es algo bueno, pero significa que Estados Unidos debería mantener el liderazgo.
¿Cómo es posible que nuestro país tenga tanto poder adquisitivo por persona?
Gran parte tiene que ver con la inversión en la educación que ya se había hecho hace varias décadas atrás. Y estamos cayendo. Es un negocio que deberíamos cuidar. Realmente toca los temas más importantes que son la fuerza de la competencia y la justicia en el país. Es todo igual. Si se hacen las cosas bien, se puede avanzar en los dos campos. Sólo espero que los empresarios que vean la película “Waiting for Superman.com” se involucren para ayudar la educación.
¿Qué opina personalmente de los maestros de Estados Unidos? ¿Ellos son los verdaderos responsables del problema?
Uno de los temas que surgen a lo largo del tiempo es la falta de evaluación a los maestros. Y tiene cierta belleza muy predecible. Significa que no se identifican las mejores prácticas ni se encuentran aquéllos que no entran dentro de la profesión. Y en los últimos años, han presionado para que no cambien en ese sentido. La película lo muestra muy directamente. Uno de los sindicatos de maestros tiene algunos programas pilotos para evaluar a los profesores. En el estado de Colorado implementaron una ley donde exigen ciertas evaluaciones a los maestros y quienes no resultan ser efectivos pierden ciertos beneficios. Nuestra fundación genera fondos para esos cambios, aprovechando la tecnología.
